Too tiny to be of much use

Review by R. Carlson, 2010-04-15

Never would have believed a Rand McNally atlas would be nearly useless for travelling, but as far as I'm concerned this one is. The dimensions are very misleading! Any Rand McNally atlas I've ever used had maps that filled the page nearly from edge to edge. So why on Earth did they choose to use less than 75% of the page on this mid-sized atlas? Very disappointed. The free atlas I received with my Harley Davidson H.O.G. membership put this thing to shame and it was nearly the same size. Way less detail and less close-ups of large cities than in any previous atlas I've owned from Rand McNally. If you don't plan to use a magnifying glass, don't consider this atlas... even then the detail is poor. Can't quite figure out what's so "deluxe" about this either!

Too much advertising and "guides"

Review by Douglas M. Buyer, 2010-01-24

Not enough space devoted to the maps--which is after all what an atlas is about. Maps are small, without enough detail. Pages are crowded by travel guide information and advertising.

Buy the large size

Review by Serendipity, 2009-11-12

We have a 2002 copy of the large size and used it more than the new midsize edition. The large one is much easier to use even though it can be clumsy in the car.

Great size, but lacks detail

Review by Pkg Guy, 2009-08-12

I was looking for a smaller size road atlas to keep on my desk at work. This fits the bill. It is a perfect size and each state is on its own page. The only problem is that it lacks some of the detail you get in a larger atlas. For instance, it does not show you every town. I like it enough that I think I am going to get another one for home.

Helpful if you need a portable road atlas

Review by Serena, 2009-07-30

This atlas is a nice compromise between detail and portability. The type is quite small and some features are in difficult-to-read gray and red fonts. Honestly, a magnifying glass would help. But with an atlas this size, I'm mainly looking for main roads and towns in context, and this delivers.

Personally, I do a lot of tourism and map research on google even before I go. So I would have preferred less "tourist info" on the individual city pages, which would have allowed for some larger city maps. But others might find that helpful.

If you need a road atlas that you'll leave in your car permanently, I would go for a larger one. But if you plan to use rental cars at your destination and want one to stick in your carry on bag, or are looking for an atlas to use in combination with a GPS, this is a good choice.
